Steve Cooper Is The Favourite In The Next Middlesbrough Betting Odds Market 696q22

Steve Cooper

The best football betting sites in the UK are looking at the main contenders in the Middlesbrough manager odds market – and a man with Championship promotion pedigree heads up the list.

Steve Cooper is a former Premier League manager who is currently without a job and he is therefore, the 2/1 favourite to be the next boss on Teesside.

Cooper was in charge of the England side that won the Under-17 World Cup in 2017, with players such as Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho and Morgan Gibbs-White starring.

He led Swansea to the Championship play-offs two years in a row, losing the 2021 final to Brentford. But he went one better in his next job, winning at Wembley with Nottingham Forest in May 2022 to take the club back to the Premier League.

Having kept Forest up in their first season in the the top flight, Cooper was sacked shortly before Christmas 2023. And he didn’t last long in his next job – as he was dismissed by Leicester City last November, barely five months after he was appointed.

Former Boro Player Gary O’Neil Fancied For Middlesbrough Manager Role 4w144y

Gary O’Neil

Gary O’Neil, who made over 100 appearances in more than three years at Middlesbrough, is the second favourite to replace Michael Carrick.

O’Neil ed Middlesbrough from Portsmouth for around £5million in August 2007 and was part of the team that was relegated from the Premier League in 2009.

After retiring as a player, he quickly built a solid reputation as a coach, working with Liverpool’s Under 23s and on the backroom staff at Bournemouth – who appointed him manager in 2022.

Bournemouth sacked O’Neil in June 2023, but less than two months later he returned to the game as the Wolves head coach. He led them to a 14th-place finish in 2023-24, but he was dismissed in December 2024 with the club in the Premier League relegation zone.

O’Neil has been out of work since then, but his links with Middlesbrough and his managerial experience mean he is the 4/1 second favourite to take over at Boro.

Former Everton Boss Sean Dyche Among Contenders To Take Over At Boro 4b2r3x

Sean Dyche

Sean Dyche is also looking for a new job and is one of the names being linked with the Middlesbrough manager’s position.

Dyche scored a penalty for Chesterfield in the famous 1997 FA Cup semi-final with Middlesbrough – when the club that was then in the third tier almost got through to the final.

But it is as a manager where he has really excelled. He spent almost 10 years at Burnley and twice led them to promotion from the Championship – which will no doubt impress Boro chiefs if they decide to part company with Michael Carrick.

Dyche’s most recent job was with Everton. He kept them up on the last day of the 2022-23 season and then guided them to safety last term, despite two points deductions.

He was sacked by Everton in January and is undoubtedly one of the leading candidates to take over at the Riverside Stadium.

Former Liverpool Legend Steven Gerrard Linked with Middlesbrough Job 35245

Steven Gerrard

Steven Gerrard is arguably the most high-profile name who is being linked with Middlesbrough if they sack Michael Carrick.

After a glittering playing career with Liverpool, Gerrard’s first senior managerial job was with Rangers – who he steered to their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade in 2021.

He left Ibrox later that year to take over at Aston Villa – but he only lasted 11 months there before he was sacked.

Gerrard’s most recent job was with Al-Ettifaq in the Saudi Pro League but he left in January.

Commentary: sportscasting.com/uk spokesman Shane Orton reacted to our ‘Middlesbrough Manager Odds’ saying: 3b2j3y

“The chance to take over at Middlesbrough would appeal to lots of out-of-work managers and the fact that Gary O’Neil spent a number of years at the club means he’s an obvious candidate.

“He wasn’t a complete success at Bournemouth but he was possibly a bit unlucky to be sacked when he was. Things didn’t end too well at Wolves, but he’s a highly-rated young manager.

“Steve Cooper has a very good Championship record and while his reputation has been damaged by his spell in charge of Leicester, you can definitely see him figuring in Middlesbrough’s thinking.

“There would be plenty of names in the frame now that Boro have sacked Michael Carrick, and his former England team-mate Steven Gerrard would definitely bring some glamour to Teesside.”
