While the Steelers welcomed Aaron Rodgers into the building this week, one of their star players was not there to greet his new quarterback.
Watt is not in attendance at the Steelers’ mandatory minicamp this week. Missing the three-day minicamp will result in a fine of around $105,000.
Watt wants a new contract and decided to skip the minicamp to voice his displeasure.
The 30-year-old is entering the final year of a four-year, $112 million contract he signed in 2021. Watt’s $28 million per year ranks seventh in the NFL among edge rushers (per Overthecap).
Watt is likely looking for a contract in the neighborhood of a Myles Garrett deal, which is $40 million annually.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told ESPN’s Brooke Pryor that he’s “optimistic” a deal will get done. However, Tomlin could not give it a timeline.
Watt has spent his entire eight-year career with the Steelers. Watt has double-digit sacks in six of the last eight seasons, including an NFL record 22.5 in 2021.
Mike Tomlin on the outlook of TJ Watt reporting to training camp in five weeks:
“I'm not going to get into speculation there… I'm optimistic we're going to get things done because we got two sides that want to get things done. When that's going to occur I do not know.”

Whenever a star edge rusher is involved in trade rumors, the Philadelphia Eagles (+300) are always one of the favorites due to their commitment to the rush.
The San Francisco 49ers (+400) have been looking for another edge rusher to pair with Nick Bosa.
Don’t rule out the Detroit Lions (+600), who are in “win-now” mode and would likely risk the future to win a Super Bowl.
