After struggling through much of the first half of the NASCAR Cup Series’ regular season, driver Shane van Gisbergen appeared comfortable Saturday, cruising around Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, the 15-turn, 2.42-mile road course in Mexico City. The qualifying session was cut short to just one hot lap because of area precipitation.
Van Gisbergen’s qualifying run was clocked at 93.904 mph, edging Ryan Preece by 0.064 seconds. He became the third Cup pilot to capture his first two Cup poles at road courses, ing Tyler Reddick and Dan Gurney.
Van Gisbergen will have Trackhouse Racing teammates among the top-10 starters. Ross Chastain will start on the inside of the second row and Daniel Suarez earned a P10.
Through 15 events, the 2023 Chicago Street Race champion posted just one top-10 finish and ranked 33rd in the drivers’ standings.
